COVID-19: EUROPEAN LEADERS DISCUSS VACCINATION CERTIFICATES AND COORDINATED RESPONSE TO PANDEMIC.
The leaders of the European Union (EU) member states are meeting today to discuss a coordinated response to the covid-19 pandemic, at a time when cases are on the rise across Europe and vaccination has just started. The summit, starting at 18:00 (17:00 in Lisbon), will take place in virtual format and will serve for the leaders of the 27 to discuss, among others, a “common approach” to vaccination certificates and the acceleration of the vaccination campaign in the Member States. The heads of state and government will, in particular, seek to define the type of use that can be given to vaccination certificates, at a time when some countries - such as Portugal and Greece - are asking that vaccinated individuals be able to travel freely within the EU . The vaccination process will also be one of the topics on the table at today's summit, after the European Commission asked Member States on Tuesday to vaccinate 70% of the adult population by summer. The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also foresees that there will be “an exchange of best practices on measures taken in all Member States”, at a time when new strains of covid-19 are emerging and when cases are increase across the EU. The covid-19 pandemic has already caused more than 2 million deaths resulting from more than 96.1 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report made by the French agency AFP. The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
